<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "palatino linotype" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Larry Marder’s Beanworld has captivated readers from grade
school to grad school over several generations. Why? No one knows. It’s a
comic that defies description. Marder always says “It’s easier to read than it
is to explain.”
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "palatino linotype" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Marder’s solo panel is a rich visual travelogue about his perplexing

eco-system. Experience for yourself why Beanworld was, is, and always will be a
most peculiar comic book experience.

First a little back story.

When I was a young man making my way in the world of advertising, the older, more experienced art directors taught me a lot about learning from my mistakes. One episode I remember very vividly was a time when we were on a very tight schedule chasing after some deadline of some magazine for some client.

Those particulars are lost in the haze of time but I do remember that it had to do with a photo that needed to be retouched by an airbrush artist. It was a C print. C prints were expensive and took at least over night to be made from a 2 1/4' x 2 1/4" film transparency. I mistakenly ordered a print of an outtake not the approved photo. They were very similar. So similar that it was hard to tell them apart. I gave it to my favorite retouch artist as a super hot rush job. He did a great job in the allotted time. I ordered a PMT to show the engraver the positioning and cropping on the key line mechanical.

So after I assembled the key line, marked up instructions to the engraver on a tissue overlay, I got an okay from the Account Executive, who was looking for typos.
He signed off on it and I handed it over to the Production Department. When press proofs of the ad came in, it was then that I recognized to my absolute horror I'd used the wrong photo. It wasn't even the headline photo--it was a small inset that the type wrapped around.

I discovered this mistake while everyone was out for lunch. I was so upset I couldn't even eat.

After lunch, I confessed my dereliction of duty to to my direct superior, the Executive Art Director.
I had failed the him, I had failed the agency, I had failed the client and worse of all, I had failed the product itself. The Executive AD squinted at the press proof, looking at the right picture and then at the wrong picture. cigarette smoke curling out of the ever present cigarette between his fingers and said "Ahhh, don't worry about it. It doesn't change the meaning of the product's selling points to the consumer."

" Are you sure? Won't they notice?"

"Maybe, eventually" he said. "If they do do what is the worst thing that can happen to you? You won't die, The worst they can do is fire you but they won't. The account director signed off on it anyway. That small picture they won't notice, A big late fee from the magazine? They'll notice that."

And then he said "You'll probably never make a mistake like that again."

I don't remember making that kind of mistake again but goofs always happen.
It was a lesson in coping with errors.

When TOTB #1 came out I had been in adverting a long time. In fact, I was the Executive Art Director now. My deal with Eclipse Comics was that if I made my comics without an upfront page rate, made my own film negatives, and did advertising and marketing work for them, they would solicit, print, distribute and collect money from the distributors at no charge. It was a good deal.

When the first copies arrived at the agency. First thing I always do is make sure the pages are in order. Then I can relax. Then, I don't know if it was me or someone else in the office but I became aware of a mistake on the cover,

Uh oh!

I was horrified!
As Dr. Strange used to say "Curse me for a novice!"
Of course no one in the greater world of comic books noticed but me.
But as many of you can attest, if you bring me a TOTB#1 I will happily repair the mistake and fill in the gap. I'll sign the correction too.

I learned how to live with mistakes.
They happen.

Hoka Hoka Burb'l Burb'l!

Bob Heer, a longtime Beanworld reader and proprietor of Gunk'l'dunk asked "Does Proffy turn invisible on page 146 or was that a mistake?"

My answer was "Bob, if I have to choose between Proffy going invisible or a creator error--I'll plead the mistake."

The proper panel is shown below. Proffy disappeared when I was converting the 22 layer PSD file into a 2 layer print-ready TIF (art and lettering on separate layers). Doing some forensic research into my PhotoShop files it looks like I was fixing a typo and deleted poor Proffy right at the moment she was making a profound observation about a key turning point in the Cuties' lives.

I was kinda was surprised that my reaction was "Oh well, mistakes do happens." When and if the book is reprinted it will be corrected.

But if you want to correct it yourself, feel free to download the panel and place it in your book.

Just think of it as Do-It-Yourself Beanworld 2.0

It's hard to believe that Hoka Hoka Burb'l Burb'l is out in the world after all these years.
In the Afterword I explain some of the reasons why it took me so long.

After a lot of personal ups and downs, in the spring of 2016, I finally settled down and started acting like a serious comic-book creator again. After last year's San Diego Comic-Con, I promised any one who was listening that I couldn't dare show up at Comic-Con 2017 unless I had a finished book in hand. (It was kinda close, y'know?)

In order to accomplish this I had to shut out the world and be totally immersed in Beanworld. That meant ignoring almost everyone I know, and stop looking at Twitter, Facebook and all comics related news sites.I reached a point that the seemingly endless crawl of things in my feeds were either people squabbling over politics or ranting about corporate comics stuff I'd stopped caring about.

I recognized that after 30+ years I didn't have to know everything about the business anymore because no one was paying me to know all that stuff anymore. (I'm not even sure it is possible anymore.) It was liberating in a way only a few former colleagues can really understand.

The only social media I participated in was Vine and to a lesser extent Tumblr.
I loved Vine.
Exploring the endless visual and sound possibilities of a six second video loop was seductive.
Vine was the perfect distraction.
Over time, I fell into the company of a ragtag bunch of visual artists, writers, photographers, and people that are just really funny.

The best part was, with very few exceptions ( Hello,TheMisterBumboShow.), hardly anyone on Vine knew anything about me beyond the stuff I was regularly posting. I participated in a few local Vine meet-ups and I didn't try to hide Beanworld or anything, I talked about it as much as anyone wanted to. Being a comic book creator just wasn't that big a deal. Going to Comic-Con was though. People were often very impressed that I could get into Comic-Con because it was all but impossible for them to go. That I went was for more impressive then the fact that I was an exhibitor.

It was in the digital company of these folks for three years that I mostly interacted with as I worked on Beanworld. Twitter shut down Vine right about the time I was really digging into The Battle to Finish Book Four. It was a very sad time for Vine folks. But the truth was, most people didn't "get" Vine beyond it being a temporary novelty. Twitter shut it down because there just weren't enough people there anymore.

I took my act over to Instagram where a whole lot of people do know me. Instagram can't handle a perfect loop but it's close enough for me. In the process I taught myself the fundamentals of iMovie and settled in there.

I make little collages of pictures and sound.
I find the pictures randomly.
I open my Tumblr feed and start scrawling down.
I choose an image or bit of film and I start chopping it up and blending it in with others bits of stuff into a very fast animation that soon has a sort of life of its own.

Then I add music from my library and give it a title.
Those are the three pieces--movement, music, title--each influencing the other.
I only use music from my own digital collection--it's music I've been listening to all my life and I "just know" what song to use and what part of a song to use.

Then I post it and that's that.
It usually takes me about 10 to 30 minutes.
I generally make 'em at night and in bed.

They have absolutely nothing to do with Beanworld--not directly anyway.
It's the same brain that channels Beanworld but some different part of it.
To me the process of selecting and combining the various elements are part of an act of creation made out of "found objects" like any collage.

When I start I don't know what will be on my feed.
I don't know what things will be near each other on my feed.
It's not 100% random but it sure feels like it.

And that is the kind of thing that I like.

This is an unabashed plug for the Kickstarter drive of a great little illustrated book called Ramblings of a Third Grader.

It was written by one of my best friends, Suzy Kuperschmidt--when she was in third grade!

I'll quote Suzy from her Kickstarter pitch:

Explore the world through the eyes of a third grader that didn't have access to an iPhone, XBOX, laptop or some other mode of information-gathering system. This third grader actually had to write legibly with a #2 pencil.

In 1964, I remember riding my bike to the library (without a helmet) and the excitement I felt when I found the perfect book to check out. My quirky little stories in RaMbLiNgS bring that sense of nostalgia to the pages of this book from a third grader's innocence of awe and wonder. I also created My RaMbLiNgS spiral notebook for kids to write their own quirky stories and create art masterpieces.Nothing makes me smile more than seeing a child reading an actual book with dog-eared pages. It takes me back to a simpler time. For a brief moment, sit back, relax and stroll down memory lane with me and see if you can spot the misspelled words and bad grammar!

Here is the inside scoop: Suzy’s primary school teacher, Mrs. Sewell, encouraged her young students to keep a journal and to write in it as much and as often as possible. The stories our little Suzy wrote are filled with the pure awe, wonder, and written with the innocence of a child. And yet, there are so many hints and clues foreshadowing the person Suzy would become as an adult.

Duchamp in front of The Large Glass

It should be no secret to anyone that Marcel Duchamp is one of my primary influences as an artist. At this particular point in my life I study & think about Duchamp quite a bit. Last week, after New York Comic-Con, my fellow Duchampian fanboy geek, Charles Brownstein and I made the trek to Philadelphia to experience the Arensberg wing of the Philadelphia Art Museum. It was an excellent trip. We walked in front of The Large Glass at midday, the sun was shining brightly through the glass doors and the light was hitting the painted glass in a way neither Charles nor I had ever seen before in previous trips. The subtlety of the color was rich and almost glowing.

This was my first experience with The Glass since my cataract procedure and so some of the extra crispness and vibrant color could have been chalked up to the fact I see stuff better now but Charles saw the same extraordinary warmth of the colors. (Because it was midday I chalked it up to Dreamishness.)

Peeking through the holes in the wooden door to view the extraordinary world of Etants Donne was
as mid-boggling as ever. It is something that has to be experienced. No photograph of what is inside ever does the installation any justice. The atmospherics you witness as a peeper into this alternate reality are indeed as Jasper Johns described as "the strangest work of art in any museum."

But that's not what I'm writing about today.
I'm here to tell you about something else, another example where Beanworld crossed paths with Duchamp, or more precisely one of Duchamp's influences -- Cranach the Elder.

I don't know how many times I looked at the above Man Ray photograph of Duchamp and Bronia Perlmutter as Adam and Eve. Dozens, hundreds, I dunno. And i'st usually is subtitled as "After Cranach the Elder." But I have to admit, I never really gave much thought to who Cranach the Elder was.
That is until I started reading a book I bought a few weeks ago, Marcel Duchamp in Munich:1912.

Duchamp's self imposed exile in Munich was only for 3 months. It was there that the ideas that later became The Large Glass began to take root. He went to a lot of German art museums and was quite struck by the way that Cranach the Elder painted flesh tones. I wanted to read a bit more about Cranach the Elder and went to the Internet.

The moment I found the above painting I instantly realized "Ohhhhhh, after Cranach the elder. Duhhhhh!"
Odd that a tribute to the artist was done in black and white, well, a silver print, but still, some dots were connected. Duchamp tried out the colors he saw in Cranach in The Bride painted while in Munich.
You can see what he was trying with color blends in the painting below.

But that's still not what I'm here to write about.
While I was looking up Cranach the Elder I came across this:

It's Cranach the Elder's signature.
His signature!
It's pretty small in the paintings.
Was he a member of a secret society?
Does it have alchemical meaning?
No one knows.

The winged serpent is something I've long been fascinated with.
I wrote about it years ago and you can find it here.

Yes, of course, the first thing I thought of when I stumbled on this was Beanworld's owned crowned Goofy Sermon Jerk.

Anyone else see the family resemblance or am I nuts?
Actually the Goofy Jerks were more influenced by Garfield Goose than anything else but I got a real joy on connecting these dots -- as they only intersect through me. I see what I see.

Or as Duchamp would say "It's the viewer that makes the painting."
(I'll go quietly now!)

ps: For those of you who don't follow me on Twitter or Facebook, from the better late than never department I've posted pics of Comic-Con & my Korea trip.
And I'm Vine now too.

I do believe this book has shipped.
I was the book's facilitator.
It was fun.

This is what I wrote about the book in the book:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">This book is the
vision of a man who is a legend in his homeland of South Korea, Lee Hyun-se.
During his tenure as chairman of KOMACON, Korea Manwha Contents Agency, he had
an idea to try something new and unusual.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Last year,
KOMACON conducted a nationwide talent hunt for young South Korean artists. The
prize was the opportunity to move for six months to the United States, study
English, and learn about the way we create comics in the west. The goal was for
Korean artists and America writers to collaborate and co-create new
intellectual properties together.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Less than a
month after final judging, six young artists found themselves in Los Angeles
living in a big house near Griffith Park in Los Angeles. It was called K-Studio. Various people worked
on their behalf looking for ways to accomplish the goal of collaboration. Several
American publishers hired K-Studio artists to draw work-for-hire books and
covers.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">About halfway
through the artists’ six month visit to the US, I was asked by my friend and
colleague, Milton Griepp, if I could lend a hand. We quickly came up with the
idea of this anthology. KOMACON offered
to fully underwrite the project. Everything would be co-owned by the creators.
The only hitch was the task had to be completed before the artists went home at
the end of January, only two months away.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">I didn’t know
the artists. I didn’t have any writers. We didn’t have a publisher. All I had
was a ticking clock. I rolled up my sleeves, got into my car, and drove up to
the K-Studio house, pulled out my laptop and gave them a PowerPoint
presentation entitled “Who is Larry Marder and what is he doing here?”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">For the next two
months my life and the lives of the artists I know as In-Hyuk, Cory, Rock,
Chan, Hae Mi and Yoon were intertwined. Joining us was our madcap LA-based interpreter,
Sonia Lee, without whom none of this could have happened as quickly as it did.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Each artist
wanted to do a 500-page graphic novel, but we only had 12 pages for each story.
By the end of the month we had broad outlines of the world each artist had
envisioned. I put together very detailed documents of each story so that a
writer could take the ideas and reshape them with the artist.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">I chose six
writers that I knew and trusted. I needed them to write a script in a week. A
week! The six I asked all agreed. Beau, Rick, Anina, Joe, Ben and Colleen
pulled off miracles.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">I stepped back
and the creators, well, created. Together. Sure there was a language barrier,
but somehow it all came together. My advice to everyone throughout the process
was, “One step at a time. One day at a time. One bridge at a time.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Thanks to
Michael Kahn at Brickhouse Law, Jim Valentino at Shadowline and the amazing Tom
Orz this book got finished at a blinding speed that still makes my mind reel.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">There is an old
saying about quests: “It’s the journey
not the destination.” The book is finished now; the K-Six have gone home. I
already miss the daily problems to solve. I had the time of my life. These are
memories I will cherish forever. I thank Lee Hyun-se and KOMACON for having the
vision to try something new and asking me to come along for the ride.

On Monday I'm going to South Korea to be an invited guest to BICOF.
I have no idea what to expect.
I'll report it all in due time.
That is all.

I've had Top Hats on my mind a LOT lately and I can't begin to hazard a guess why.

I've had a thing about how cool top hats are since I wore on when I was 10 years old as part of charity ball pint-sized honor guard for President Truman in 1961.

Actually I don't remember wearing the top hat at all but pictures don't lie...that' me alright.

It's all rather funny because over most of my life I rarely wore hats voluntarily.

(Now I do for health reasons)

But I sure do love drawing hats...the sillier the better.

Late last spring to start hand crafting little bits of leguminous treasure.

Pretty early on I stumbled upon these wee top hats in a crafts catalog.

I ordered them without knowing what I might do with 'em.

The main result is shown below:

I didn't really have a name for 'em--didn't matter 'cuz every kid that came to my table at Comic-Con under the age of 10 instantly called them "Magic Beans" and who am I to say differently?

So that's what they are.

Also seen in the pic are a few of the little rings I made.

The rings were an afterthought after a suggestion by Charles Brownstein

who said "Those DC Green Lantern rings are pretty popular" when he came through town in May.

He is right of course, I still have my Black Lantern ring that someone gave me years ago.

So I ordered some inexpensive blank, expandable bases and cooked up rings.

I didn't make very many and I was happily surprised at how fast the were adopted off my table.

This one picture is worth a thousand words:

I've barely cracked the surface of what loony Leguminous Finger Loops can be.

I suspect they will be a permanent staple for a while to come.

The drawing below has nothing to do with anything except I drew it at Comic-Con.

This is the fifth year that cbldf and tfaw teamed up for the annual San Diego Comic-Con auction.

A great overview of my participation in the project is here.

Below is the actual artwork I donated to the auction.

I was very pleased with the result and will be doing other works like it in the future.

As is my habit as a doodler, I drew somethings on the cards during the run of the con.

I used sketches in the Goofy Service Doodle Books as springboards.

A gallery of the TFAW cards that made it back to the studio can be found here.

After too long away, I'm back to doing some blogging.
The above is a bit of a teaser--some panels from Beanworld Book Four: Something More.
It's flash back.
For those of you who scored a Glimpse Book ash can comic at San Diego or Chicago--it comes after the teaser shown on page 17.
The rest of you will have to wait (he said rather cryptically).

In the meantime, below is an interesting oddity that popped out of the Fabled Beanworld Archives.
The top drawing is a marker sketch on Bienfang 360 layout paper and labeled "cover #16."
The actual cover of Tales of the Beanworld #16 published in 1990 is shown below.
I find it interesting that I followed the outlines of the inner working of the Sprout-Butt when I did the final noodling. I wouldn't do that today as I can be so much more spontaneous on a Cintiq and working in Photoshop than with real pen and ink

I've "graduated" from Artist's Alley,

where I've been sitting since my return to full time comics creator status,
and earned a spot in the fabled Small Press area

(listed under Beanworld Press L-04)

where once upon a time,
I was a charter member before going off
to join the circus on the business end of comics and toys.

So what will I have on display.

The just published all-color Tales of the Beanworld hardcover.

If you smartly already purchased it from your local comic book retailer,

you know I'll be glad to sign your copy.

Cory had cancer.
In 2001 she was diagnosed with an agressive Stage II breast cancer.
She had excellent doctors and did all the things one does with cancer. After surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation; she had reasonable expectations that she'd beaten it. She was cancer-free for seven years.

And then in 2008, after a routine check-up, it was discovered Cory's cancer had returned.
Her breast cancer had moved and taken up residence in a new neighborhood--her lungs. And after surgery to remove one of the lobes of her lungs, Cory spent the next three-and-a-half years in and out of radiation and chemo. When cancer comes back and moves to another part of the body, it's a totally different ball game than when one has it it the first time. The odds are more steep. It didn't matter to Cory. She kept working and travelling. always talking and planning for the future. Always smiling. Always worrying about everyone else more than herself. It's just who she was.

Cory fought her cancer with every bit of courage and strength she could summon until she had absolutely nothing left to give. And then she died quickly and quietly. She couldn't have planned it better if she tried.

I knew she was heading out, I just didn't know when. Her last weeks were truly an amazing time between us. We were able to share so many memories of the life we lived together for 30 years. We had something extra special and we both knew it.

For as much of a public person I am in the comic book industry; behind the scenes I'm a very private person. I don't really have much to say beyond what I'm saying here.

But I thought I'd share something with you.

I'm not quite sure when I drew it or how it came to reside in this little frame. Cory was never sure either. But we both remembered it was a little present at some point early on as we were falling in love. The colors aren't according to Beanworld canon. There are trees along the horizon. Beanish has red shoes! This drawing is older than than the official Beanworld continuity.

Wherever we lived, this little drawing was always somewhere in the bedroom. It might not be accurate in a Beanworld sense but it is perfectly true from a Cory and Larry point-of-view. Beanish and Dreamishness were born in personal comics that I drew just for Cory. Most of those comics will remain private until I'm gone too. You can read about that here (second column--2/3 way down) and continued here .Can't remember which cat was responsible for breaking the glass but it has a nice Duchampian feel to it.

No one loved life more than Cory. Others have written far more eloquently about the impression Cory made upon them. Charles wrote an amazing piece. Heidi built upon it. and Ivy kind of wrapped it up.

People have asked about Cory's favorite charities.
Cory supported virtually every animal cause there is.
But the two that stand out most in my memory are the Amboseli Trust for Elephants and Best Friends Animal Society.

As for me?
I'm doing as well as one can expect to given the circumstances.

But I never forget that I was married to Cory and for three decades I was one of the luckiest men on the face of the earth. After all--she really was my Dreamishness.
The Eisner nominees have been posted.
As always people are ecstatic and mortified by the list.
Can't say that I blame them.

You put six people widely different comic book backgrounds with widely divergent tastes and the results can wind up looking rather inexplicable.
I got that during the voting and I get it again today.

In the end, it all came down to six votes and the goings often got strange.
Below is the bit of commentary I was asked to write for the Eisner page on the Comic-Con site.
So here goes:

------
Okay, comic book, it's just you and me now. Let's see what you got."

That's the method I used each time I cracked the cover of a comic as an Eisner judge. On my side, I had 50+ years of continuous comics reading since the dawn of the Silver Age. Add to that my credentials as creator of small but respected alternative comic, Beanworld.
All the hoopdee-doo, the hype, the heat, the raving complimentary blurbs on the back cover, the placements on year's end top 10 lists, previous award-winning reputation of publisher and creative teams went out the window. It came down to the story I was reading at that moment and how that story filtered through my brain.

That's what judging is. And that's how it went with me. I approached each and every comic book I read with the most open mind I was capable of summoning.

Now, I don't want to get too deep here, but anyone who has ever been around me for any length of time understands that I don't believe in any sort of measurement of something commonly known as "quality in art." This is something that often drives people crazy because it is their living and livelihood to be the arbiters of what "quality in art" is.

My personal standard is simple but I believe honest. "I found this interesting"opposed to "I found this uninteresting." I'm passing judgment based solely on my own taste. I believe that is what an Eisner jury is chosen to do, and so, that is what I did.

I was tapped to be a judge with five other people. I didn't know any of them previously and only knew two by reputation. We corresponded a bit at first and had our first real intermeshing as we went through the process of selecting two giants of the comics artform to the Hall of Fame. Then we also chose the candidates to be voted upon for the other hall of fame spots. It was an opportunity to get some insight into the other judges' thought processes. And for them to sneak a peek into mine.

Then the books started coming. There were so many books and comics to read before the judging meeting in March. At one point I was reading at least three trades a day. I took this responsibility so seriously that I stopped working on my own book. Well, I had to; I knew I couldn't forcefeed my brain that much of other people's stuff and still pretend that my own creative decisions weren't getting disrupted by the process. I like to be able to savor my comics reading experience and then let the book resonate for a while. An Eisner judge doesn't have that luxury.

By the time we convened in San Diego for the judging, I thought I'd done a pretty good job of keeping up with most of the books eligible for an Eisner nomination. That thought went out the window when I saw the huge stacks of books I still needed to read.

Being sequestered in a room with the other judges for day after day was a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can't begin to recall how many comics I read one after the other over those three nights and days. And there is nothing comparable to a bit of sorbet to cleanse one's palate between courses of devouring books. Every single time I thought I was getting a handle on a category, another judge would hold up a book say "Hey, guys, have you read this yet?" Read it? I hadn't even noticed it before.

The conversations, to put it mildly, were quite lively. Some of the other judges are far more educated than me and used a lot of the language of academia and criticism. I rolled my eyes more than once at them as they did right back at me. And as a creator, I won't kid around, it's painfully difficult to witness the work I most admired of another creator get cut. But a round of voting was definitive and we kept moving along. I don't think I've ever talked about other people's comics so much, for so long, in my entire life. And that really covers a lot of personal history in our business.

As the final vote tally gelled, books I never thought would be cut didn't manage to make it to the finish line. Everyone felt individual pains in that way. Reality is six people casting votes, and you really don't know how the chips are going to fall. Do I think another jury of other people would have placed other books into nomination? Yes, of course I do. One thing I'm certain of, in my opinion, everyone got a fair shake with these judges.

-----------

So read the lines and in between the lines and make of it whatever you think I'm saying or leaving left unsaid. I just want to add, that as someone who witnessed and participated in the whole thing, I can say that no one was deliberately "snubbed."
What an awful thing to say.
It implies a mean-spiritedness on behalf of the judges.
The judges are all people who love the comics medium.
Just some just didn't love the same comics that you did.
If, and when, you are ever asked to be an Eisner judge, then you'll understand what I'm struggling to express, a little bit better.

And now, as Forest Gump said "That's all i have to say about that."

The production budget alloted for a one color endpaper.

But Diana and designer, Tina Allesi, came up with this design.
They sent it to me, fingers crossed, hoping I'd like it enough to bust the budget a bit.
My reaction was (of course) Awwwwwww!

Will the printer charge extra money to produce it in two colors?
Oh yeah, but hey, that cash will come out of my end not the retailer's or reader's.

Going to two colors is a subtle thing the reader might not ever notice.
We all believeit will provide a bit of "oomph" to the final product at the point-of-sale.

And as the final arbiter of such things on my creator owned and controlled book
I get to make the final decision.
(Yay, creator owned books!)

The design came through right before WonderCon

There has been a splatter of opinions about Pop Art in the blogosphere lately. It was set in motion by a thoughtful piece by Scott Edelman regarding the trompe l'oeil paintings by Sharon Moody. I'd never heard of her before last weekend but I am very impressed with her extreme photo realism. Although my own tastes tend towards primitive, minimalistic, and conceptual art work, I've always had a soft spot for Chuck Close since I saw my first giant painting face-to-face in 1972 when he was a big-effin-deal in NYC gallery system. (His medical challenges changed his work and it's even more amazing now).

I understand the hows and whys of the comic art community's current complaints.
I do.
I don't agree but I do get it.

I also believe there is another side particularly when it comes to Roy Lichtenstein.

These pop art/Roy Lichtenstein dust-ups happen every few years-particularly since the advent of the Deconstructing Roy Lichtenstein website. In 1989 in the midst of a contemporary controversy in the letter column of Comics Buyer's Guide I wrote a letter to the editors, Don & Maggie Thompson, in defense of Lichtenstein. To my amazement then (and even now) they decided to run it as an article.
I got paid for it.
I believe I signed a back-of-the-check work-made-for-hire release for it so it belongs to them--not me.

I include links to old photocopies of the article for purely historical reasons. You can read my two page piece by following these links: page 1 and page 2. It's shown without permission.

As I explain in the piece, Lichtenstein stopped doing comic book paintings in 1965. That was 24 years before I wrote the piece in 1989. 22 years have passed since.
A lot of water under the bridge.
My bridge anyway.

I still believe all the things I said.
Most of the questions I asked I believe are still valid and mostly unanswered.

My favorite Lichtenstein works are still the mirrors and brushstrokes.
I'm really not trying to change any one's mind--my mind is set and most likely, so is yours.Larry Marderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09936917049779513696noreply@blogger.com5
